![]() ![]() To save money, most shingle manufacturers have switched to shingles containing asphalt but mostly made up of fillers such as fiberglass and crushed limestone, which encourages the growth of algae. Why does roof algae seem to be more common today that it was 20 years ago? Traditionally, asphalt shingles got their name from being made up of mainly asphalt-an oil based product-and felt material. This is also true for townhomes, condos and apartment complexes. Because these spores are airborne, they can quickly spread from rooftop to rooftop in a neighborhood. They can be carried by wind, animals and even on your clothing. ![]() This is what makes those unattractive black streaks on your roof!Īlthough algae can be found on all types of roofing, it tends to be most common on asphalt shingles.Īlgae spores are airborne. Why does this algae appear to be black? Gloeocapsa has the ability to form a protective darkly pigmented outer coating that shields the algae from damaging UV rays. By the time this algae is noticed by the homeowner, it has usually been on the roof at least two or more months. This algae growth usually begins as small spots and then eventually becomes visible streaks. The most common type is known as gloeocapsa magma-also known as blue green algae. Let me know when it comes out and I'll evaluate it.Although these dark spots and ugly black streaks on your roof may look like dirt, mildew, soot or mold, what they really are is algae. I wish you luck and I'm hoping that you will release a much improved and more powerful FormZ free. Anyway you guys are smart enough to figure out a more inviting approach that would make everyone want to grab a copy of FormZ Free. Perhaps the layout features could be a pro feature as in Sketchup. For example you could encourage third party plugin development for the free version and make the plugin compiler part of the pro version. I'm sure you can figure out what features to only include in the pro version. I really believe a much more powerful free version of FormZ with great documentation would blow away the Sketchup market but you can't be cheap about what's included. It seems to be the 3D standard and surely that must have a commercial value. And the fact that it now has a huge community who are using the free versions means that a lot more people are buying the pro version for many different reasons that I can only guess at. SketchUp Make has issues, it's messy but if something doesn't work quite the way you want, there's a good chance that a cheap or free plugin is available to fix the problem. Maybe the installation work seamlessly on a Mac but it was terrible on my Windows 10 laptop and most people would have just given up after experiencing the problems I had. I'm very motivated and more knowledgeable about computers than most of the designers and architects who will download the FormZ Free package. ![]() In any case, why not have a separate Youtube channel for the free version? That would be a huge help and cut down on the confusion and wasted time for the people who do decide to stick with the product. Again, I don't think most of them will choose to upgrade. Probably this was not your intent, but the viewer has to decide to upgrade or else he/she have wasted their time by learning about tools that don't exist in their version of the product. The same thought occurs to me when I watch the learning videos which really seem targeted to the pro versions. But why should they when a vast majority of them are not architects and Make is free and gets the job done. You must believe that many users of the FormZ Free will choose to upgrade when they realize how limited the free product is. in my opinion, unfortunately your product does not compete and the installation and evaluation of product features has left me a bit confused. I can only guess that the decision to release a free version was based on a desire to capture a portion of the Sketchup Make market. ![]()
